Dieser offizielle Museumsführer zum Münter-Haus, im Volksmund auch als „Russenhaus“ bezeichnet, fächert verschiedene Aspekte des Lebens von Gabriele Münter (1877-1962) und Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944) in Murnau auf. Ein Kapitel widmet sich dem Garten, den Kandinsky mit großer Hingabe gestaltet und bestellt hat. Auch die Funktionen des Münter-Hauses als Schaffensort und als Treffpunkt wichtiger Persönlichkeiten aus dem Interessenkreis des “Blauen Reiter” werden näher erörtert. Ein weiteres Kapitel gibt Einblick in das Leben Münters in dem Haus ab 1931, dem Jahr, in dem sie sich dort endgültig niederließ.
Am 21. August 1909 erwarb Gabriele Münter das Haus an der Kottmüllerallee in Murnau. Von da an bis 1914 hielten sich Gabriele Münter und Wassily Kandinsky oft in diesem Haus auf. Sie richteten es gemeinsam ein, legten den Garten an und bemalten die Möbel nach eigenen Entwürfen. Die Murnauer Landschaft, insbesondere das Haus selbst, sein Garten und die unmittelbare Umgebung, wurde für Münter und Kandinsky zu einer wichtigen Inspirationsquelle. Oft malten sie den Blick aus dem Fenster zur Kirche und zum Schloß sowie zur Bergkette. Ausgehend von der Auseinandersetzung mit der Landschaft entwickelte sich Kandinskys Malerei zur Abstraktion.
Das Münter-Haus spielte ferner eine ausschlaggebende Rolle in der Geschichte des „Blauen Reiter“. Es wurde zu einem bedeutenden Treffpunkt der Avantgarde. Franz Marc, der in dem nahe gelegenen Sindelsdorf wohnte, Alexej von Jawlensky, Marianne von Werefkin, August Macke und Arnold Schönberg kamen oft zu Besuch ebenso wie Sammler und Galeristen. Im Oktober 1911 fanden dort die Arbeitssitzungen zur Vorbereitung des Almanachs “Der Blaue Reiter” statt. Neben Münter und Kandinsky nahmen Franz und Maria Marc sowie August und Elisabeth Macke daran teil.
Als der Erste Weltkrieg am 1. August 1914 begann, flohen Münter und Kandinsky zunächst in die Schweiz, da Kandinsky als Russe zum feindlichen Lager gehörte. Im November 1914 kehrte er nach Moskau zurück, wo er bis 1921 bleiben sollte. Gabriele Münter lebte vom Sommer 1915 bis Dezember 1917 in Schweden und ließ sich anschließend in Kopenhagen nieder. Anfang 1920 kehrte Münter nach Deutschland zurück. Von 1931 bis zu ihrem Tod lebte die Malerin wieder in dem Murnauer Haus, ab 1936 mit ihrem Lebensgefährten, dem Kunsthistoriker Johannes Eichner (1886-1958).
Gemäß dem Wunsch der Künstlerin ist das gesamte Münter-Haus seit der Renovierung in den Jahren 1998/99 als Ort der Erinnerung an ihre Kunst und an die Kandinskys eingerichtet und der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich. Es wurde in seinem ursprünglichen Zustand von 1909 bis 1914 wiederhergestellt. Durch die reiche Ausstattung mit Gemälden, Graphiken und Hinterglasbildern von Kandinsky und Münter sowie mit Beispielen der Volkskunst, die sie sammelten, und mit ihren selbst bemalten Möbeln, vermittelt das Haus heute wieder einen lebendigen Eindruck von der Atmosphäre, die hier vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg herrschte.
